Let's do this!!!
Body dissatisfaction is associated with a host of negative health outcomes, such as increased risks of depression and anxiety and lower levels of self-esteem.
What is colonial mentality?
An 8-week proven approach one one one virtual coaching to break free from diet culture beliefs while making peace with food and refocusing on what really matters.
Because you are so much more than your body!
same thinking is prevalent in diet culture within the United States and perpetuates "pervasive norms that emphasize thinness, control, and restriction around eating and exercise behaviors, and the moralization of how food plays a significant role in contributing to body dissatisfaction".
It is estimated that about 84% of women in the United States are unhappy with their body image and have a desire change their bodies. This unhappiness can negatively impact mental health and can increase negative feelings of self-worth. Diet Culture is a "system of beliefs that equates thinness to health and moral virtue". Having personally gone through body shaming experiences, I am passionate about changing this narrative, helping women redefine what health means to them so that they refocus on what really matters.
It is "a form of internalized oppression that conditions colonized people to believe that their ethnic or cultural identity is inferior to Western culture or whiteness." This
Why does this matter?
I wish I was better looking.
I'm unhappy when I look at myself in the mirror.
I don't like to be in photographs.
I am embarrassed to wear certain clothes.
I fantasize about looking different.
I compare myself to how others look.
I shouldn't eat my family traditional foods because it is not "healthy".
I am embarrassed about how my food smells.
I think European American food is "healthier".
I should go on a diet to lose weight.
I am afraid for being judged about the portions on my plate.
THE TRUTH IS THAT BODY IMAGE AND BODY WEIGHT DOES NOT EQUATE TO COMPETENCE, CAPABILITY, NOR INTELLIGENCE.
I am a Certified Nutritionist empowering Filipina's and Latina's to break from diet culture and colonial mentality around food and body image and re-engage with their culture food traditions guilt-free. I'm a professionally trained nutritionist with an M.S. Integrative Functional and Nutrition degree and a certified nutritionist in Washington state.
As someone who has tried many fad diets and exercise programs because I thought I needed to 'fix' my body, I became increasingly dissatisfied with my body. And disconnected from family cultural foods thinking they were 'unhealthy' due to diet culture beliefs.
Hey there!
At one point, I was just like you -- full of body shame and guilt for not eating 'healthy' according to diet culture.
This took a toll on my mental health, so I worked with a dietician and nutritional coach to dismantle my diet culture thinking and embrace my cultural food traditions -- guilt-free. The program approach is to collaboratively work with individuals and meet them where they are on their health journey. I do not believe in prescribing fad diets and falling into a diet culture approach because I have found there is no one-size-fits-all solution. I am focused on partnering with each individual to build body trust, respect, and compassion for ourselves. This approach creates a more peaceful and joyous food relationship because being ‘body shamed’ or feeling ‘guilty’ about food is never fun.
We create our current reality through our thoughts, evoking emotions that lead us to action or no action.
As we encounter life experiences, we analyze and form opinions through our perspective lenses, such as past experiences, socialization, internalization, cultural traditions, assumptions, and diet culture. Our thoughts are then communicated to the rest of our body and our nervous system - giving us our body sensations, such as feeling breathless due to excitement or tightness in the chest from feeling anxious.
When we understand how the mindset process works, we can objectively take a step back and assess what we would like to change. You will learn the tools on how to master this mindset process and begin creating a reality that fulfills your life dreams and goals.
Module
No more diet books or magazines articles offering you hope to lose weight to be happy and fulfill all your dreams.
Your body is not to be 'fixed'. In this part of the program, you will learn about reconnecting with your body by listening to its hunger and fullness cues. I will challenge you to assess any food rules to begin making peace with food and gaining body acceptance. We will also redefine what 'health' means to make the right food choices for you. It's not about perfection!
Module
You will learn about how colonized people believe that their ethnic or cultural identity is inferior to Western culture or whiteness, and this includes food.
Decolonizing our diets is not intended to tout eating "superfoods". Instead, it is a whole system of eating — a reconnection with our ancestors in eating food that is flavorful, satisfying, and nourishing.
This is about honoring our bloodline, having the freedom to eat foods that make you feel good...spiritually and physically.
Module
We will work together to rise up from diet culture and gain body trust. Because body acceptance is a powerful thing! It enables you to let go of what is holding you back, and to focus on the things that really matter.
Through a journey of self-discovery, you will be guided to discover the root cause of any struggles surrounding body image. The process involves assessing emotions that surface during body image thoughts, such as what happens when looking at social media.
Module
Gentle nutrition is about making food choices that honor your health and wellbeing. There is a reason gentle nutrition is towards the end of the program because without healing your relationship with food and body first, we don't want to fall into the trap of making this a diet.
This is not about eating a 'perfect' diet to stay healthy. It's about incorporating foods that make you feel nourished and good.
